Theotokos literally translated means
"The One who bore God" or "the God bearer" which is much
more accurate, and profound than "Mother of God." Theotokos actually
has no English equivalent, and is a title for Mary, and as such it should not
be translated.

Schema-hieromonk St. Nilus of Sora Skete (†1870)
“It
is truly right to bless you, O Theotokos, ever blessed and most pure, and the
Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more
glorious than the Seraphim, without defilement you gave birth to God the Word.
True Theotokos we magnify you.” ~ Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom
